2002 Tenuta dell Ornellaia Messeto

Dark garnet color. On the nose, developed, medium+ intensity, figs and black currants, bittersweet chocolate, chalky earth, tobacco, layered, complex beyond expression, with lots of earth and a nice oak component. On the palate, dry, seamless, medium+ body, medium tannin, medium acidity, serious balance, serious beauty, with ridiculous depth, and complexity that made me wish I made enough money to enjoy treats like this all the time!

2002 Nota Bene Cellars “Abbinare” Washington State

I popped one of the last few bottles of this the other night, and it rocked! Purple ruby color. On the nose, developed, medium+ intensity, leather, tobacco, cocoa, dried herbs, definite mineral, some oak spices, and some earth too. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium body, good acidity, still some tannic structure left, with a beautiful balance of fruit, earth, oak, and other flavors, with a very nice finish. I knew this would go the distance, and it has!

2002 Pago de Los Capellanes Ribera del Duero Reserva

pago_capallanesThis was a present for helping re-bin with wine room at work. Ruby with browning edges. On the nose, evolved, big time bouquet, still some cherry, dirt, leather, cigar, meat stick, perfume, spice, some oak, and earthy. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium body, cherry fruit roll-up, tobacco, dusty earth, very nicely balanced, with a beautiful finish.

2002 Ridge Monte Bello Santa Cruz Mountains

ridge_monte_04Wow. It was dark but the color was a ruby garnet. On the nose, developed, medium+ intensity, plums, currants, cherries, all black, spice box, cedar, dust, earth, tobacco, bittersweet chocolate, with some oak. A beautiful bouquet. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium+ body, medium tannins, medium+ acidity, stewed plum and black cherries, cigar, veggies, spices, with a very elegant Bordeaux like finish. Great wine that few can compare to.

2002 Cht St Jean Cinque Cepages Sonoma Valley

Opened and decanted this for my birthday dinner last night, rack of lamb and braised short ribs. I could have pulled the racks out a few minutes earlier, but they were still tender and juicy. On the nose, moving towards bouquet, medium+ intensity, cherry, cassis, leather, tobacco, cigar box, dust, some basement earth, and some oak. Very balanced bouquet, that is precisely what I look for in California Cabernet. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium tannin, great spice, softened fruit, medium acidity, moderate alcohol, and a long finish. Happy that I have twenty more of these.

2002 Vega Sicilia Valbuena Ribera del Duero

Not sure of the reason for the vintage variance in the Ribera del Duero, but it exists, I’m sure mother nature had something to do with how different these two wines were. I found the 02 to be brighter in both fruit and tannin. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, cherry, red currants, game, tobacco, definite earth, and med+ levels of oak, but layered enough to stand up to the oak. On the palate, dry, big time structure, big time tannins, lay this down and revisit in 7-10 years.

2002 Cristal Champagne

I always like to taste wines like this with a clear mind, forgetting what I may have thought about previous tastings or vintages. Unfortunately, as I took my first huff of this hyped sparkler, I was instantly brought to a place where quality matters very little, and product placement and marketing are everything. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, bread, oatmeal, creamy fruit loops cereal component, and beyond that, nothing all that interesting. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, good acidity and bready character, some citrus fruit, beyond that, no depth, no tell tale chalky earthiness, moderate finish. Certainly not worth the cost. If you love this wine I am sorry but you’ve been had. Take a bottle, and pour it blind with three other Champagne’s that cost $50, and see what happens.

2002 Ridge Monte Bello Santa Cruz Mountains

I have been secretly selecting favorite guests to show this gem. Edgar Martinez, bought the rest of our 99 selection. Hard to say if 2002 is a good vintage in the Santa Cruz Mountains as I don’t have much info. This is a legendary estate vineyard that’s attached to the Paris Tasting of 76. What I like to call the “Cult Cab” before the term existed and sells for a third the price. On the nose, evolving bouquet, medium+ intensity, very interesting and complex, some bordeaux basement, cigarbox, dark cherries, black currants, and a lingering vegetative spice component. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, softened tannins, medium acidity, very well balanced, remarkably old world in style, and obviously showing of it’s ability to age well. I only got about 1/2 an ounce, but cherished every second I let it open and evolve. Please start collecting this wine, it’s better than a lot of the Culty Cabs at a third the cost, let’s support that kind of cause.
