2000 Travaglini Gattinara

I busted this out of the cellar last weekend for Italian dinner with the family and decanted for about an hour. Ruby to brown color with orange rim. On the nose, developed, medium+ intensity, clove, tar, violets, anise, sour plum and cherry, lots of chalky earth minerality, layered spices, with moderate amounts of oak. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, really well balanced, with a nice array of sour fruit, spice, and flowers, lots of complexity, and a beautiful finish. Solid wine, I think I have one more!

2000 Stags Leap Winery Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

Ruby with brown edges. On the nose, developed, medium intensity, currant, plum, cedar, menthol, spices, some earthiness, and some oak. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, layered, complex, almost Bordeaux, with a silky finish with moderate length. This wine rocked, it was herby and spice driven, and loaded with “other” flavors, and rolled like velvet over the palate.

2000 Peter Michael Les Pavots

PeterMichaelLesPavotsRuby with bricking to it. On the nose, developed, medium+ intensity, showing off lots of spice box, leather, tobacco, bell pepper, with some plum and cassis, a dusty earth component, and subtle oak. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium body, silky tannins, medium acidity, very well balanced, black fruit, loaded with “other” flavors, creamy mouth-feel, and a solid finish.

2000 Cristal Rosé Champagne

cristalroseA very generous patron left a very generous gratuity last night and this was part of it. Beautiful nose, of strawberry, apple, lemon, white flower, mineral, cream, brioche, slight earth, and not any oak to speak to. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, dare I say perfect acidity, extremely balanced, with an amazing finish that made me want more. Hard to say if it’s worth the price, but still an A+.

2000 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon

quilcedacreek1 Dark room, but the wine was a dark purple in color. On the nose, developed, medium intensity, plums, black cherry, black currant, cedar, spice-box, tobacco, some oak, and some dusty earth. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium body, beautiful balance, lots of dark fruit still, medium tannins, medium acidity, with a long solid finish. Very solid wine, especially considering what they paid for it. That being said, if I paid $125, like the current releases, I don’t think I would have been as satisfied.

2000 Sheridan Vineyard Red Table Wine

sheridanDavid Leclair got some great news yesterday and showed up at the Lukafresh BBQ with a totebag of wine to celebrate. I happened to be in the right place at the right time. Nice ruby color, with some browning on the edges. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, juicy cherry, plum, raspberry, bell pepper, dust, meat, leather, herbs, some oak, and some earth. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, very vibrant cream black and red fruit, with leather, cigar, pepper, nice balance, with a 20 second finish. This bottle went quickly.

2000 Chateau Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

cht_montelena On the nose, bouquet, medium+ intensity, bell pepper, stem, tobacco, spice, leather, ash, cigar box, currant, cherries, some dustiness, some oak, very nicely integrate bouquet. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium+ tannins, medium acidity, nice balance, with moderate use of oak, and a seamless finish. Drinking like a Bordeaux of very high pedigree, and holding up really well despite the press completely bashing this vintage.

2000 Tenute Silvio Nardi Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto Manachiara

Last night Jacob and Xuong came in to celebrate their anniversary. and brought this incredible Brunello. Really nice couple with a collection of nice wines with some bottle age on them. On the nose, beautiful bouquet, of medium+ intensity, cherries, figs, tea leaves, anise, chalky earth, perfume, floral element, not oaky, extremely complex, and continued to evolve for the rest of the evening. On the palate, dry, med+ intensity, sour cherry, tar, leather, chalk, medium tannin, great acidity, and an amazing broad finish. Wow, this wine killed it, thank you Jacob and Xuong.
