1999 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon

Some guests brought this in, it rocked, note to public, please let your Quilceda age and evolve into the wine it should. On the nose, it had bouquet, medium+ intensity, still packed with black cherry and black currants, the secondary elements are emerging. like cedar, spice box, vanilla, chocolate, leather, very layered. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, velvety tannins, great acidity, and awesome balance and finish.

1999 Chateau Palmer Margaux

Legendary estate from an amazing vintage. Purple to ruby color. On the nose, youthful with some development, black currants, cherries, leather glove, basement character, with layers of tobacco, lots of spice, some oak, and definite earth. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, very balanced, shockingly youthful, classic Bordeaux sophistication, with layer upon layer, and a world class finish. If you don’t know black currant and have a spare $400, this wine will kick ass.

1999 Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Dark ruby color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, stewed plum and cherries, cedar, cigar, some oak, and subtle mineral. On the palate, this wine really took off, dry, medium+ intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, molasses, cherries, figs, maple syrup, cedar, spice, beautiful balance, and spectacular finish. In it’s sweet spot right now, so make a special occasion if you have some of this.

1999 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley

quilcedacreekRuby with browning edges, noticeable rim variation. On the nose, developed, medium intensity, cherry, plum, fig, black currant, cedar, cigar, violets, stemmy, lots of perfume, dusty, some oak, and some earth. Layered and loaded with charm. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, softened tannins, medium acidity, still fruity, with immense spice, beautiful balance, and a long finish. It reminded me of great Bordeaux with prettier fruit. Just amazing, if you still have some, this wine is starting to enter the sweet spot. If you’d like to donate any to the Ambassador of Wine, I would be happy to revisit this wine again.

1999 Chateau Deyrem-Valentin Margaux

cht_deyrem_valentinDark ruby color. On the nose, developed, medium intensity, plum, black cherry, cedar, lots of earth tones, cedar, tobacco, stem, bell pepper, perfume, spice, some oak, and certain earth. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium+ tannin, medium+ acidity, big time presence, and nice balance of fruit, earth, and a slew of “other”flavors. Broad and muscular with nice finish. B+

1999 Domaine Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Garennes

leflaive_pulignyAmazing bronzing golden color. On the nose, developed, medium intensity, stones, every kind you can imagine, gun flint, almonds, hazelnuts, stewed apples, wood spice, some oak, loaded with earth. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium body, crushed stones, straw, bread, toasted nuts, seamless integration, some fruit left but not much, medium+ acidity, with a long finish. Arguably past it’s prime, but still a good bottle of wine.

1999 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon

cht_montelena Nice ruby color, faded to a watery rim. On the nose, developed, medium+ intensity, black cherry, plum, black currant, stem, tobacco, cedar, leather, spice box, some oak present, and some earthiness as well. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, loaded with classic Napa Valley dark fruit, add a earthy leathery component, medium+ tannin, medium acidity, very nicely balanced, with a strong finish. This would have been hard in a blind setting, I would have called it aged Cabernet but from Bordeaux.

1999 Baron de Ona Rioja

barondeona Lighter ruby color with browning edges. On the nose, developed, medium intensity, plum, cherry, raspberry, fig, leather, cigar, dirt, dill, spice, lots of oak, and plenty of earth. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium+ tannins, medium acidity, moderate alcohol, dark fruit, a hearty amount of oak, cigar tobacco, with a 20 second finish. Solid wine, I’m glad I have more.
