1995 Chateau L’Eglise Clinet Pomerol

Wow, what a treat. Ruby color, some brown to the edges. On the nose, developed, stewed plums, black currants, figs, bittersweet chocolate, cedar, exotic spices, loaded with earth, and moderate usage on the oak. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, with medium body, medium tannins, and medium acidity. This wine had beautiful balance, classic Bordeaux flavors seamlessly wound together. Loved it!

1995 Chateau Lafite Rothschilde Pauillac

I do really love the people that can afford to drink this wine, and I especially love the people that don’t hesitate when they see a wine they know rocks. Nice ruby color with some browning. On the nose, developed, medium+ intensity, earth, and basement, loaded with spices, cigar, leather glove, and black currant, fig, and cherry, fruit, with earth, oak, and lots of “other” elements. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium+ body, very balanced, an almost indescibable harmony of elegance and power, with a thought provoking finish. All-star wine, and I think this guy bought our last two bottles.

1995 Chateau Margaux

cht_margauxYeah, the table gods love me and I love them back more. Ruby color, with definite rime variation. On the nose, developed, medium+ intensity, immense amount of spice, cedar, cigar, leather, tons of basement, some black currant, and fading cherry, some oak, and yes there is unmistakable earth. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, faded fruit, but seamless balance, beauty almost beyond description, with medium tannins, medium acidity, and a very long spicy finish. Perhaps on the down side, but maybe going through an awkward stage.

1995 Chateau Lafite Rothschild Pauillac

cht_lafite_rothsA table brought this in and left me a nice sized glass. Impressive quality that jumped out of the glass. Dark black ruby color. On the nose, developed, medium+ intensity, earth and spice driven, black currant, black cherry, cigar box, basement, pencil shavings, cardamom, clove, overt earth with some well integrated oak. Classic Bordeaux with depth and the kind nose that makes you wish every wine you tried was this good. On the palate, dry, still very structured, medium+ tannin, medium acidity, seamless dark fruit, loaded with spices, tobacco, stemmy vegetal element, with a long flavorful finish.

1995 Cain Five Napa Valley

cain5I was gifted a nice three ounce pour of this and tasted it over the course of a few hours. Nice ruby color with some browning to the edges. On the nose, evolved, still some black currant, black cherry, but the spices, cedar, and cigar notes are just blowing up in this wine, moderate oak, and some dusty components. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, beautiful balance, the structure is still holding up, with an impressive finish. Drink now, but this still has some shelf life left.

1995 L’Ecole Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley

This wine was remarkably youthful still, and a testament to how amazing Washington wine is and getting better every year. On the nose, moving towards bouquet, med+ intensity, explosive dark fruit, cigarbox, tobacco, spice starting to emerge, not earthy, and not oaky. On the palate, dry, med+ intensity, med tannin, medium acidity. This wine was beautifully balanced, with a moderate finish, but I tried it with some monsters so it could have been a perspective thing. Will hold up another 3 years I suspect. A+ effort.

1995 Whitehall Lane Winery Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

Same folks I just wrote about brought in this wine. This wine had more fruit in it. On the nose, bouquet, but killin the dense black cherry and cassis smoothie, if you throw in a cigar, a piece of cedar, and a few stems, pencil shavings, a couple coffee beans, and a vanilla bean. On the palate, dry, med- tannin, creamy dark berries, rocking the tomato leaf vegetal, beautifully balance, and a med+ finish. Extraordinary wine that they probably paid next to nothing for upon release. Wish I was laying down more wines like this.

1995 Joseph Phelps Insignia

Some really nice people brought this in and told me where to go next friday to meet a group of wealthy Bellevue folks that cellar amazing wines and share them together. The wine Gods do shine a light for me to find my way.
The nose was bouquet all the way, med+ intensity, layering cassis, blackberry, cedar, spice, dust, leather, tobacco, just about everything I expect from a well made aged Napa Cab. On the palate, dry, great balance, structure, and length, with med- tannins. This wine kicks the 98’s ass, and still has some life left in it. Drink now if you like perfect wine at it’s peak, more than another three years might be pushing it.
