1990 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

cht_montelenaI was gifted a small taste of this wine and it crushed me and left me with a taste of fooloshness for not having anything of this wine in my cellar. Ruby color. On the nose, developed, medium+ intensity, black currant, leather, cigar box, clove, cardamom, chalky dusty component, some oak, and slight earth. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, beautifully seamless and pretty spices, with an amazing finish. This wine was probably peanuts when it was purchased, and comparatively speaking you still get a lot of bang for your dollar from this winery.

1990 Chateaux Lynch- Bages Pauillac

Lars brought this as a present for all the Sommeliers at the Poncho Wine Auction on saturday night. First, I am afraid to taste any more wine, I had too many really complex wines to wrap my head around, and feel great wine seemed whimpy that night just because of the sheer volume of amazing wine.
Beautiful browning ruby color, with a distinct rim to core variation, med- intensity.
On the nose, med+ intensity bouquet, this wine had everything that I love about Bordeaux. Dusty, Earthy, perfumey basement, cigarbox, as well as cigar, green vegetables, and some black cherry and black currant. I could have kept smelling this for hours.
On the palate, med+ intensity, similar flavors as the nose,
great tannin that have softened but are still present, and great acidity. Loved the finish, loved the wine.
This used to be the great steal of Bordeaux, now has become spendy, but worth every penny.

1990 Joseph Drouhin Clos de Mouches

This was my first opportunity to taste aged Burgundy. I didn’t have the opportunity to spend a lot of time with this wine, and that may be the reason I thought it was very good, not great.
Pretty browning ruby, and a med low intensity, the kind you can see through.
On the nose, bright candied cherry, then stewed plum and fig, cinnamon, and earth. On the palate, the earth really hit me hit me and started running for the finish line. Subtle elegant sexy juice I tasted for minutes.
When tasting great Burgundy it is important to not expect and Cabernet. It’s a different beast, and the finish can be deceiving, what seems like a not that powerful wine can finish like a champ and last.
