2006 Forgeron Zinfandel Columbia Valley

Haven’t had much Zinfandel from WA that I liked, hard not to discriminate at this point. Purple ruby color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, plum, blackberry, spice, mint, leather, no earth, and some oak. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium acidity, medium tannin, medium body, if I had this blind I would have shrugged and said New World Merlot. Not all that interesting of a wine, lacking character which I rarely accuse Zin of.

2005 Four Vines Maverick Zinfandel

4vines_MaverickRuby color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, gushing with red fruit, strawberry, raspberry, red plum, cobbler, some spice, vanilla, layered oak flavors, no earth but a very pretty nose. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, very silky and beautifully balanced wine with an elegant fruit driven finish. I preferred this vintage over the 07.

2007 Four Vines Maverick Zinfandel

4vines_MaverickDark ruby to purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, lots of black pepper, dark stewed fruit, blackberry, plum, some oak, coffee, toffee, and not earthy. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, briary element emerged, still black fruit with cracked black pepper, with a moderate finish. I enjoyed this austere Zin.

2006 Frogs Leap Zinfandel

frogsleap_zinDark ruby color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, briar, pea patch, pie crust, black pepper, smoke, not earthy, with some oak. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium+ body, medium tannin, medium acidity, lots of black fruit, sweet peas, pepper, not candy bar, nicely structured with a good finish, not loaded with depth but a solid Zin.

2007 Robert Biale Black Chicken Road Zinfandel

biale_black-chickenThis was the first wine I tried at the ZAP event the other day. A beautiful place to start. Black purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, serious herby bramble element, framed by loads of plum, blackberry, crumbled coffee cake, baking spices, not earthy, with moderate oak flavors. On the palate, dry, medium+ tannin, medium acidity, med+ alcohol, nice balance. This wine wore all of its components well, and was worth a second visit after my palapte warmed up.

2007 Seghesio Home Ranch Zinfandel

seghesio_home_ranch This was one of the stand-outs from the ZAP event the other day. Very hospitable family with serious root in Sonoma. This is a classic Sonoma field blend, with some Carignan and Petite Sirah. They had high praise for the 07, saying it incorporated all the best components of 05 and 06. Beautiful dark ruby to purple color. On the nose, youthful, blackberry, boysenberry, plum, subtle preserve character, cracked pepper, cooking spices, mint, sage, bramble, not earthy, and layer oak. On the palate, dry, beautiful dark fruit, medium tannins, medium acidity, very nicely balanced, balanced alcohol, solid 30 second finish.

2007 Orin Swift The Prisioner

orinswiftI had been waiting a while to sample this wine, that’s been getting tremendous scores for a few vintages. It’s a dry farmed zinfandel based blend with a kitchen sink of other grapes in the blend. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, smoke, plum, blackberry, briary component, black pepper, licorice, not earthy, and some oak present. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, very nicely integrated, has beauty, finesse, and balance. I thought it was going to be more alcoholic and less balanced, this wine impressed me and lives up to all the hype.

2006 Ridge Lytton Springs Zinfandel

ridgelyttonAlways a pleasant bottle of wine, and once again it delivers. Nice garnet color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, blackberry, plum, black pepper, baking spices, bramble, pea patch, some oak, but no detectable earth. On the palate, dry, very well balanced, medium tannin, medium acidity, solid long finish. Not a fruit bomb or over baked pie, solid Zinfandel.
