2009 Omnivore Cellars Tempranillo

This has been open a couple of hours now and it has evolved immensely, becoming even more approachable. Ruby color, medium intensity. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, cherry, leather, cigar tobacco, cocoa, dill, subtle dust, and nicely balanced oak. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, with jammy red fruit, toasted coconut, slight mineral, and a salumi component that had just emerged. This wine is killing it, layered and complex.

2006 Izadi Reserva Rioja

This red was right up my alley. Purple ruby color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, coffee, cherry, blueberry, blackberry, meat, cigar, some earth and some oak too. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium+ body, big fruit, layered spice and mineral, good balance and really nice length to the finish. I want more of this beauty! Buy this wine!

2004 San Vincente Rioja

We popped this at work tonight, just awesome! Ruby color. On the nose, youthful but showing development, medium+ intensity, cherry, cigar, mineral, spice box, violets, dried herbs, loaded with spices, some oak and earth. On the palate, dry, medium body, medium+ acidity, medium tannin, a lot going on, beautiful balance, and many layers of non-fruit flavor mingling with some dark cherry flavors, on a beautiful finish. This wine was even better eight hours later, I only hope there is more!

2007 Urban Ribera Tinta del Pais

I’ve been waiting for this wine to hit our shores for months, this wine is complex and delicious for the price point. Ruby color. On the nose, youthful, cherry, black plum, soil, tobacco, leather, subtle oak, with a nice mineral backbone. If you like Tempranillo his wine destroys it for the price.

2003 Guelbenzu Azul Ribera del Queiles

Ruby color with some orange, 39% Tempranillo, 34% Merlot, and 27% Cabernet Sauvignon. On the nose, earthy, medium intensity, lots of cherries, plums, fig, leather, flowery, citrus, loaded with cigar, with moderate oak, and definite earth. On the palate, dry, medium body, good complexity, medium tannin, medium+ acidity, juicy fruit, chalky soil, leather, good depth, good balance, and a solid spice and plum finish. Few bottles left of this, I will drink them all if I have to. Purchase this Wine!

2005 San Vincente Rioja

I’ve got some seriously good wine luck. We opened the 2006, eager to have a look at the new vintage, but it was corked. So, Jason opened the 98 pointer 2005 vintage to make up for it. This single vineyard Rioja had amazing black purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, cherry, leather, earth, cigar, licorice, plum, perfume, lots of earth, and some oak too. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, loaded with fruit and earth, lots of cigar, layered with spice, and a finish that has elegance and power. This wine deserves every big score it got and every time I get to try it exceeds the last. There’s not much left on the shelves, so if you have this wine, save some, but enjoy some now!

2008 Triton Tempranillo Zamora Spain

A new project from Jorge Ordonez. Black garnet in color. On the nose, youthful, medium + intensity, cherry, mud, espresso, chocolate, leather, cigar, with definite oak, and subtle earth. On the palate, dry, ripe and delicious, medium+ intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, rich texture, fruit, earth, and oak all harmoniously coming together. Very good value!

2003 Finca Allende Rioja

This was a treat from way back in my cellar, and was something I busted out to get a free piano lesson. Dark ruby color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, big time cherry, earth, and cigar, I mean like un-mistakable, with cocoa, plum, sage, some oak, and definite oak. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, silky, balanced, delicious, cherry, milkshake, dust, with a nice finish. This wine killed it, balanced somewhere between new and old Rioja, it was precisely what I like about red wine.
