2007 Tempus Cellars Columbia Valley Syrah

20110422-024718.jpgBlack purple color. On the nose, youthful, med+ intensity, smells like juicy black fruit meets hillside cracked black pepper and wild game. On the palate, dry, med+ intensity, jammy black fruit, cracked black pepper, game, medium tannin, medium acidity, with a layered and beautifully textured finish. This wine killed it!

2006 Nashwauk Shiraz Mclaren Vale

On the palate, dry, medium intensity, silky with medium tannins, medium- acidity, a creamy chocolate shake with good spice and black fruit. Descent finish on this Shiraz of moderate complexity.

2008 Obelisco Tejen Syrah Red Mountain

Tried this at a tasting yesterday. Dark ruby color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, plum, cherry, blueberry, loaded with cooking spices, a bit of meat, cracked pepper, with no earth to speak to, and a healthy amount of oak. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, nice balance, with a good length to a spice driven finish. I’d like to try more of this wine.

2008 Goedhart Family Syrah Bel Villa Vineyard Red Mountain

Black purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, cherry, plum, funk, animale, coffee, chocolate, with toasted oak aromas, and no earth to speak to. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, with the funk, wild beast, and coffee flavors dominating a moderate finish. Over-priced two dimensional wine that I would pass on spending this much for.

2009 Spring Seed Wine Co Scarlett Runner

Purple ruby color almost fuschia, from organically grown grapes. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, plum, raspberry, blackberry cobbler, cocoa, leather, with some oak, and no earth to speak to. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, ripe black fruit, cocoa, with a creamy milkshake component, and a silky finish. Why don’t more restaurants and bars pour this by the glass?

2008 Mark Ryan Winery Wild Eye Syrah Red Mountain

The 2008 Wild Eye Syrah had inky black purple color, and was very intiguing and complex upon first sniff. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, plum, black cherry, black pepper, white pepper, meat, leather, loaded with spice, with medium+ oak, and no earth to speak to. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium acidity, silky tannin, very layered delicious black fruit, beautiful balance, complex wine with moderate length to the finish. Solid wine that wine age quite well. I still have some 04’s I’m enjoying.

2007 Darby Syrah The Dark Side

Dark garnet color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, black cherry, black plum, pepper, perfume, old tire, some oak, with no earth to speak to. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, big bright black fruit explosion, with subtle spice, bright acidity, medium tannins, moderate finish. This is one of the rare occasions I would that a bit more oak might make this a bit more interesting.

2004 Texier Cote Rotie

texier_rotieThis wine just destroyed all others at the tasting. Ruby to black in color. On the nose, youthful but showing some development, medium+ intensity, very ripe black fruit, plums, figs, cherries, cracked pepper, meat stick, awesome array of spice, nicely integrated oak, and neatly tucked behind all that is some earth. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium tannin+, medium+ acidity, medium body, awesome structure, extremely well balanced, layered with spice, and possessing an almost divine finish. Spendy but extraordinary.
