2008 Gorman Winery Evil Twin Red Mountain

First day of wine tasting in over 10 days, my biggest hiatus in years, and very thankful for this reintroduction. Purple ruby color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, cherry, plum, subtle funk, coffee, leather, cracked pepper, with moderate oak, and no earth to speak to. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, very nice layers in this wine, a palpable sense of depth and complexity, with good, fruit, spice, “other” flavors, structure, and finish. Very solid wine, loaded with all the things I like about wine.

2006 Longshadows Saggi Columbia Valley

Black purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, coffee, caramel, mint, pretty flowers, black plum, black cherry, with some oak, and not any earth to speak to. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, leather, plum, cherry, chocolate, with a good finish. Good wine that lacks the complexity of this price point.

2007 Mas de Can Blau Montsant

I hadn’t tried this one and some time ago it slipped on the menu to beef up our Spain section, 35% Syrah, 35% Carignan and 30% Grenache. Dark garnet color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, bright and jammy dark plum, blackberry, raspberry, clove, herbs, anise, leather, vanilla, coffee, no earth, and definite oak. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, great depth and balance, where luscious fruit meets rich oak flavors, a lot going on for a medium bodied wine.

2006 Hecht & Bannier Minervois

This is my post vacation re-visit to this treat, post vacation, where I drank almost only Malbec. Ruby color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, stewed plums, figs, cherries, meat, pepper, leather, some oak, and some earth to it too. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, good acidity, medium body, as this wine opened the fruit became more soft, with a lot of spice, mineral, and earth, with good balance, and a descent finish. I was looking for some ribs, or some meat falling off the bone.

2005 Maquis Lien Colchagua Chile

maquis_lienInteresting Chilean blend of Syrah, Carmenere, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, and Malbec. However, very tight out of the bottle, it got better every hour it was opened, even kicking some serious butt the second day. Inky black purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, black cherry, plum, leather, spice, bell pepper, tar, wet tobacco, and damp earth, with modest oak. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, plummy, leathery, spice laden red blend that got better every sip. With medium tannins, medium acidity, this wine was still kind of wound up and might take some time to reveal all that it has to offer.
