2005 Glen Eldon Riesling Eden Valley

Golden platinum color. On the nose, developed, medium intensity, flowers, lime, peach, nectarine, subtle petrol not, no oak, and not all that earthy either. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium acidity, light body, some fruit, but mainly flowers, and a short finish. This wine tasted good, but the flavors fade fast, the kind of wine one could easily enjoy a few bottles of on a hot day. Close out special, and I picked up a case.

2006 Eroica Riesling Columbia Valley

Platinum color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, peaches, nectarines, roses, dandelion, petrol, with no earth to speak to, and no oak. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium acidity, bright peaches, very pretty array of flowers, with good balance, and a moderate finish.

2005 Carl Schmitt Wagner Riesling Spatlese Longuicher Maximiner Herrenberg

schmitt_wagnerHot summer night. Thought about how refreshing this was going to be, all the way home. Pale straw color. On the nose, youthful, minerally, peach, lime, tangerine, gasoline, honey, some floral elements, with earth, and no oak. On the palate, off-dry, medium+ intensity, peach and tangerine nectar, laced with slate and mineral, medium at best on acidity, there seems to be a thread connecting the fatter more luscious 05’s, lower acidity. Solid bordering on monstrous finish, lots of pretty fruit, very layered, under-appreciated genre that’s also starting to gain momentum.

2005 Carl Schmitt-Wagner Longuicher Maximiner Herrenberg Riesling Spatlese

schmitt_wagnerI couldn’t wait to get home to this gem I got on close out a few days ago. They thought 05 was the greatest vintage in a generation, and the 07 came along and had a bit more acidity to frame the fruit. Quite simply, this is insane quality at bargain basement prices, that normally people charge out the ass for. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, lots of mineral and slate, with a huge pile of peaches, some petrol, lime, white flower, orange zest, earthy for sure, and no oak to speak of. On the palate, off-dry, medium+ intensity, loaded with stone fruit, minerality, low alcohol, medium acidity that’s extremely refreshing, and a nice finish. Warm summer nights don’t stand a chance against this wine.

2006 Dunham Cellars Four Legged White Columbia Valley

dunham4leggedEric Dunham was in last night doing a wine dinner and left us a bottle of this to try as well as barrel sample of Syrah from four different oaks forests in France. Pretty fascinating stuff. This wine labeled as a white table wine, looks to be 100% Riesling. Nice golden blonde color with good intensity for a white. On the nose, youthful, loads of ripe fruit, white peach, green apple, papaya, petrol, not oaky, and not earthy. On the palate, off-dry, medium+ intensity, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol, medium+ body, immense amount of fruit, white flower, honey, with a nice finish. This would be just awesome on a hot day.

2005 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Piesporter Goldtrpfchen Kabinett Riesling

kesselstatt_piesporter1 Perhaps the highlight of today’s lunch tasting at Wild Ginger. Only a few cases left so I got myself a six pack. Great golden straw color much more intense than the 07. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, nectarine, peach, apple, lime zest, orange peel, auto shop, lots of earth, and not oaky in any way. On the palate, off-dry, medium+ intensity, ripe fruit, austere minerality, floral component, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol, confirmed no oak, and awesome finish.

2007 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Piesporter Goldtrpfchen Kabinett Riesling

kesselstatt_piesporter On the nose youthful, medium intensity, very floral, with peach, apricot, lime, petrol, slate, earth, and no oak. On the palate, off dry, medium intensity, medium+ acidity, white flower and fruit, framed by minerality, with a beautiful weight and finish.

1999 Domaine Albert Mann Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg

Shame on this winery or importer for not having better images up, but in their defense, they poured a library 99, when the current release is 05. This was the #1 wine of the 75 that I tried the other afternoon, at a, in my opinion too large trade tasting. On the nose, aging bouquet, of peach, apricot, lime zest, eight different kinds of crushed up stones minerality, and a sternness that reminded me of my third grade English teacher. On the palate, dry, precise, laser-like acidity, massive body for a white, balanced and a long minerally finish. This Riesling lets you know who’s in charge and let’s me see how great this wine gets with some bottle age. Whatever this price this Grand Cru Riesling will continue to give for another decade.
