2002 Nota Bene Cellars “Abbinare” Washington State

I popped one of the last few bottles of this the other night, and it rocked! Purple ruby color. On the nose, developed, medium+ intensity, leather, tobacco, cocoa, dried herbs, definite mineral, some oak spices, and some earth too. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium body, good acidity, still some tannic structure left, with a beautiful balance of fruit, earth, oak, and other flavors, with a very nice finish. I knew this would go the distance, and it has!

2006 Gaja Ca’marcanda Magari

A gift from a colleague, blend is 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc. Purple to garnet color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, currant, leather, chalky soil, chocolate, with cherry, some dried herbs, tobacco, oak and earth, the fruit is is pure but definitely on the back burner here. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium acidity, medium tannins, good balance, pure black currant fruit, leather, tobacco, and certain minerality, with layers of flavors, and good complexity. I have always and continue to have a soft spot for this wine, and it keeps delivering.

1996 Chateau Lafleur Pomerol

Ruby color. On the nose, the Cabernet Franc really shows through, this wine is developed, medium intensity, earthy, vegetal tree bark, leather, spice, oozing mineral and basement, with moderate oak and lots of earth. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, serious depth and complexity, cherry, black currant, loaded with spice, and a beautiful balanced finish.

2008 Cline Oakley Five Reds

Had this last night with Moroccan brisket, the spice in this red blend of Merlot, Zinfandel, Alicante Bouche, and Petite Sirah, this really matched up well with the brisket. Ruby garnet color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, black raspberry, plum, cherry, exotic spice, with creamy oak and dill flavors, with no oak to speak to. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium body, medium acidity, this wine is spicy, with lots of dark berry, pretty perfume quality, with good balance, and a moderate finish. This wine delivers with lighter fare and killed it with a turmeric and tomato brisket, but I could easily see this being an awesome pizza wine. At this price please drink more of this because it is an over-achiever.

2006 Chateau Fonplegade Saint Emilion

Ruby red color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, loaded with cherries and plums, leather, cedar, some earth, and some oak. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, very luscious fruit, velvety texture, well rounded and balanced, with medium tannins, medium acidity, moderate complexity, with good length to the finish. Blind I thought this was Old world from Right Bank Bordeaux from a ripe vintage. Nailed it!

1995 Chateau L’Eglise Clinet Pomerol

Wow, what a treat. Ruby color, some brown to the edges. On the nose, developed, stewed plums, black currants, figs, bittersweet chocolate, cedar, exotic spices, loaded with earth, and moderate usage on the oak. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, with medium body, medium tannins, and medium acidity. This wine had beautiful balance, classic Bordeaux flavors seamlessly wound together. Loved it!

1998 Chateau L’Evangile Pomerol

This wine just crushed it! Ruby color with some browning edges. On the nose, developing with some youthfulness, medium intensity, plum, cherry, leather, cigar, earthy basementy character, perfume, some oak , and definite earth. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, balanced, layered, medium tannin, medium+ acidity, medium body, beautiful flavors and a silkiness not common with this kind of weight. A bit short on the finish, but a great wine without a doubt.
