2007 Gilbert Cellars Estate Malbec Wahluke Slope

I’m loving this winery lately, and this wine was open in the cruvinet at work, then gassed and consumed. Black with violet edges. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, blueberry, blackberry, spice, meat, wet earth, a lot of floral notes, with some oak, and no earth to speak to. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, beautifully layered candied blue and black fruit, spice, and good length to the finish. This wine rocked a delicious quality that you don’t see all that often.

2009 Pascual Toso Malbec Mendoza

I had this yesterday amidst a sea of Malbec, this really shinned. Dark ruby color. On the nose, youthful, blackberry, boysenberry, plum, leather, coffee, wet soil, spice, some oak, and subtle earth. On the palate, dry, medium tannin, medium acidity, very good balance, layered flavors with a solid mouth feel, and good length to the finish. Over-achiever!

2006 Melipal Malbec Reserva

Dark purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, lots of dark berries, boysenberry, blueberry, blackberry, wet earth, bark, herbs, leather, spice, lots of New World Oak, with subtle traces of mineral and earth. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, pretty nice balance, dark inky fruit, with some coffee flavors coming through, above average oak, but it’s nicely integrated with the the fruit, and framed by some cigar and forest flavors. Solid Malbec with moderate length to the finish. Not as delicious as the Norton or Altos Las Hormigas but this drinks pretty well.

2006 Finca Domingo Malbec Salta Argentina

From some of the highest vineyards in the world, 6600 feet I think. Ruby color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, chalky earth, old tire, iron, black plum, cedars, loaded with granite, and minute amounts of oak. On the palate, dry, chalky and old world, dark berry fruit, granite, with medium+ tannins, medium acidity, good balance, with a rustic feel and finish. Not even the same world as Mendoza Malbec but worth a visit, and give it some air.

2007 Enrique Foster Malbec Reserva

Ruby color with fuschia edges. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, blueberry, boysenberry, blackberry, coffee, leather, slight briary element, seaweed, some earth, and some oak. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, moderate alcohol, luscious and textured, spices a plenty, with some length to the finish. Good representation of Reserva Malbec, but not awesome, must revisit for further analysis!

2005 Pascual Toso Malbec Pedregal Vineyard

On the palate, dry, med+ intensity, med tannin, med acidity, amazing depth and balance, loaded with layers and a stellar finish, this wine nails $100 depth for $50! I want more!

2007 Altos de Las Hormigas Reserva Malbec

Black purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, blueberry, black plum, leather, subtle briary component, inky, violets, with moderate, oak, and no earth. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, explosive black and blue fruit, loaded with spices, and rounded out with layer oak, with beautiful texture, very nice balance, and an above average length to the finish.

2006 Bodegas Norton Privada Malbec Mendoza

Awesome value if you are looking for something to replace Napa Merlot.
