2007 Achaval-Ferrer Quimera

achavalquimeraThis is a multi-region blend of 38% Malbec, 24% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 14% Cabernet Franc aged for 12 months in 40% new French oak before bottling without fining or filtration. Inky purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, red plum, blackberry, black currant, graphite, green herbs, wet earth, lots of spice, nicely layered, with some oak, and slight earth. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, very creamy red fruit, medium tannins, medium acidity, with moderate alcohol, nice balance, and a descent finish. Easy wine to convert those Silver Oak lovers.

2003 Chateau Lassegue St Emilion Grand Cru

cht_lassegueRuby color. On the nose, youthful with signs of development, medium+ intensity, cherry, plum, pencil shavings, stemmy component, classic Bordeaux basement, leather glove, spice laden, some oak, and some earth. On the palate, dry, medium+ body, medium tannin, medium+ acidity, beautifully integrated fruit, earth, and oak, with a long spice and cocoa finish.

2006 La Posta Malbec Pizzella Family Vineyard Mendoza Argentina

Opened this last night and thoroughly enjoyed. Today I googled it and saw Jay Miller gave this 90 points. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, lots of dark berries, plums, graphite, violets, wet earth, tire, spice, and some oak. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, moderate alcohol, plums and blackberries, almost a seaweed like component, with moderate finish. Solid wine with interesting depth, good complexity, didn’t skip a beat the next night either.

2005 Clos de Los Siete Tunayun, Argentina

I had this the other night after a wedding. It says by Michel Rolland on the bottle, and is a newer project of hims in Tunayun, about 50 miles south of Mendoza. It’s a Bordeaux blend heavy on the Malbec as all Argentine wines should be. On the nose, youthful, dense, medium intensity, blackberry, red currants, plums, spice, mineral, wet slate, some earth, and some oak. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, med tannin, med acidity, good body, the alcohol was in line, and a broad finish. Descent wine for the price point. I am seeking out more of this.

2005 Henry Lagarde Guarda Mendoza Argentina

I opened bottle number 00138 tonight, closest wine to revisit in my condo, and from what I remember, this was juicy New World inky fruit. On the nose, youthful aromas, med+ intensity, dark berry, ink, dairy, meat, and a seaweed component. On the palate, dry, red currant, cranberry, blackberry, milky, meaty, black pepper, medium tannin, good acidity, structured, and a balanced long finish.

2005 Henry Lagarde Guarda Mendoza Argentina

Picked up a case of this to see how it will evolve. The blend is 40% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Syrah. On the nose, youthful, dark berries, dried herbs, ink, spice box, black pepper, some oak. On the palate, dry, med+ intensity, med acidity, medium tannin, blackberry, pepper, spice, a creamy element, med body, moderate length of finish, but complex enough to make me happy.
