2006 Hirsch Gruner Veltliner #1

The 06 has a new label, for the better I think. Just had this at Terry Theise tasting, this was the least expensive of the bunch. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, creamy floral element, blackberry, black pepper, some mineral but mainly fruit. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, peppery, dark berries, citrus, cream, medium acidity, moderate finish. I really liked this one, it’s a shame because a few years ago this would have significantly less expensive.

2006 Salomon Gruner Veltliner

Haven’t had many of this varietal, but went to a tasting that highlighted 15 and as many Rieslings with the importer Terry Theise, one really respected palate and expert on the area. I really liked this one, and he called a great example of typicity. Pale straw in color of medium intensity, and medium viscosity. On the nose, aroma, med intensity, creamy floral citrus fruit and grass driven, and subtle wet stone minerality. I would have thought this was Oregon Pinot Gris, and would have been very wrong. I really like this nose. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, some pepper and spice, great acidity, and good length on the finish. If you like Sauv Blanc or Pinot Griggio, try this, more People should be drinking this wine.
