2007 Feraud Brunel Chateauneuf de Pape

Ruby color. On the nose, youthful, earthy, medium+ intensity, dried herbs, meaty, raspberry, strawberry, perfume, red licorice, clove, mushroom, hay, with moderate oak. On the palate, dry, meaty, gamey, chocolate, strawberry, with good spice, mineral, medium tannins, medium acidity, very nice balance, good depth and complexity, and a solid finish. There was an intriguing component to this wine, from a vintage that is supposed to rock, this wine delivers I must have more.

2006 Massena The Moonlight Run

Ruby garnet color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, plum, blackberry, mulberry, strawberry, leather, old tire, cracked pepper, meat, mint, with oak, and subtle but present earth. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium tannin, medium+ body, rocking a granite and iron element, luscious texture, milky mouth feel, medium acidity, with a good length to the finish. There’s something special here, mineraly and earthy with more than enough perfectly ripened fruit to balance this architypical Aussie GSM blend, and I’m looking forward to my next visit with this wine.

2008 Monte Oton Garnacha

My first re-visit of 2008 Monte Oton killer lighter bodied wine that’s cheap and appeals to many palates. Light ruby color. On the nose, youthful, pretty red strawberry, raspberry, white pepper, with spice and earth, but not much oak to speak to. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium- tannin, medium acidity, layered red fruit, with lighter body, and loaded with spice and earthy textures. This wine still delivers insane value for the money, yes you have to like red fruit, white pepper, and silky body, but if those characteristics appeal to you, you will love this wine.

2005 McCrea Cellars Sirocco

This little beauty of a new world Rhone blend was open for about an hour before I got to it. 45% Grenache, 35% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah, 5% Counoise. Ruby color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, black plum, cherry, black licorice, black pepper, leather, some funk, some earth, some oak. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, very nice balance, inky dark fruit, plenty of spice and cracked pepper, wild gamey meat, with good length to the finish. This is just entering it’s sweet spot, so decant, and prepare something gamey!

2004 Laurence Féraud Gigondas

laurence_feraudFrom the woman that makes Domaine du Pegau, this Gigondas really floored me for the price. 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre. Dark ruby color. On the nose, showing some development, medium+ intensity, very pretty nose of cherry, plum, blackberry, meat, herbs, leather, framed by very elegant oak, and overt mineral and earth. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, lots of spice, cracked pepper, game, leather, with a pretty dense black fruit core, hidden red fruit, and layered finish. Perhaps the best $20 retail wine I have tried in weeks.

2007 Solence Les 3 Peres Cotes Du Ventoux

70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Carignan. Ruby color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, hay, earth, plum, red cherry, raspberry, strawberry, white pepper, meat, dried herbs, chocolate, layered oak, with earth but overtly ripe “new world fruit”. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, chocolate, plum, raspberry, milkshake, lots of spice, very “French” in style, with medium tannin, medium+ acidity, very rich and fulfilling mouth feel, with a nice length to the finish.

2007 Atalaya Almansa

Atalaya_2007I revisited this the other night, after a big score and a “kinky” reference in the description, it sold out, but Jorge Ordonez brought more over from Spain. Ruby in color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, red plum, raspberry, red cherry, strawberry, sweat, leather, spice, white pepper, chalky dusty soil, with some oak. On the palate, dry, medium tannin, medium body, very pretty spices and fruit, with a sweaty component that is distinctly sexy in it’s exoticness, with nice balance, and a solid finish. This wine over delivers for the price point.

2008 Vinos de Terruños Siete 7

siete7This is the second time I’ve tried this 80% Garnacha 20% Tempranillo blend from Purple ruby in color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, bright red raspberry, strawberry, blueberry, chalky earth, hay, white pepper, meat, not oaky, with traces of earth. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium body, medium+ tannin, medium+ acidity, intense dark fruit, nice balance, with a better than average finish.
