2009 Aletta Garnacha

A new to me old vine Garnacha from Spain. Ruby color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, mineral, strawberry, white pepper, flowers, herbs, no oak, but plenty of earth to speak to. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium acidity, medium- tannin, bright red fruit, red licorice, a pretty floral component, with a silky mineral laden finish. This wine delivers big time for the price.

2007 Vega Sindoa El Chaparral Old Vine Garnacha

Ruby color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, cherry, strawberry, raspberry, hay, white pepper, wild game, red licorice, some oak and some earth. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium- body, silky tannins, medium acidity, plenty of interesting layers, good balance, and a solid finish. This has a lot going on for the money, you would spend a lot more for the same quality anywhere but Spain.

2008 Bodegas Alto Moncayo Veraton Campo de Borja

Culty old world producer making ripe and unctuous new world style wines, crafted by Aussie Legend Cris Ringland. 100% Garnacha that has gotten some big scores the past few vintages. bright ruby color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, luscious red fruit, cherry, subtle strawberry, chalky soil, milkshake, loaded with oak spices, and not much earth to speak to, but it’s present. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, some of the prettiest red fruit out there, smothered in luxurious oak, and layered with spices, with really nice balance, and a solid finish. Classic tale of a monstrous new world wine made in the old world, that pound for pound would destroy wines 3 times the price. If you like Silver Oak, try this wine, it will blow your mind.

2007 Gramercy Cellars Grenache Columbia Valley

Redish ruby color. On the nose, youthful, strawberry, raspberry, red cherry, white pepper, lots of flowers, dried herbs, not earthy, and subtly oaked. On the palate, dry, medium- body, bright red fruit, medium- tannin, medium acidity, very pretty, lots of licorice, with a moderate length to the finish. I enjoyed this wine, it is delicious and intriguing, and a little bit “underground”, I was only disappointed in the price, charging more money than 20-30 years veteran wine-makers is just foolish.

2007 Solence Les 3 Peres Cotes Du Ventoux

70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Carignan. Ruby color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, hay, earth, plum, red cherry, raspberry, strawberry, white pepper, meat, dried herbs, chocolate, layered oak, with earth but overtly ripe “new world fruit”. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, chocolate, plum, raspberry, milkshake, lots of spice, very “French” in style, with medium tannin, medium+ acidity, very rich and fulfilling mouth feel, with a nice length to the finish.

2006 Vinos de Terrunos Mas de Negre Priorat

cepa-vieja Spent a while looking for an image of this stunner from yesterday’s Spanish tasting via triage. All I could find was this pretty cool image of a gnarly old vine called Cepa Vieja. Inky fuscia to purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, dense and concentrated, plum, blackberry, raspberry, leather, white pepper, loaded with ripe fruit, and spice, and oak, and framed by a touch of earthiness. On the palate, dry, medium tannin, medium+ acidity, balanced alcohol, explosion of new world fruit flavors, with enough of and earth flavors to match the fruit. Solid finish, will age well, you just don’t see value like this in Priorat.

2004 Tinto Estecillo Nino Jesus Vinas Viejas

On the nose, developed, medium intensity, dirt, hay, white pepper, mint, mushroom, cranberry, wild strawberry, dill, plenty of earthy, and moderate oak. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, balanced alcohol, earth, cherry , strawberry, herb, and spice dominate the palate, with a medium body, and a finish longer than 15 seconds.

2007 Bodegas Ateca Atteca Garnacha Calatayud

atteca 100% Garnacha. Soft ruby color with a slight cloudiness. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, smoke, mineral, hay, dried earth, red licorice, subtle oak, lots of white pepper.
