2006 Vinos de Terrunos Mas de Negre Priorat

cepa-vieja Spent a while looking for an image of this stunner from yesterday’s Spanish tasting via triage. All I could find was this pretty cool image of a gnarly old vine called Cepa Vieja. Inky fuscia to purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, dense and concentrated, plum, blackberry, raspberry, leather, white pepper, loaded with ripe fruit, and spice, and oak, and framed by a touch of earthiness. On the palate, dry, medium tannin, medium+ acidity, balanced alcohol, explosion of new world fruit flavors, with enough of and earth flavors to match the fruit. Solid finish, will age well, you just don’t see value like this in Priorat.

2005 Alvaro Palacios Les Terrasses Priorat Spain

Alvaro Palacios studied in Bordeaux and worked at Petrus before he settled in Priorat. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, lots of dust, earth, perfume, cranberry, red cherry, strawberry, white pepper, some oak, serious spice, and a very opulent well rounded nose. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, really nice balance, moderate use of oak, and a strong finish. This wine was showing twice as well as his 2006 Finca Dofi that was twice as expensive. Funny how that works sometimes.

2004 Clos Martinet Priorat Spain

It’s getting harder and harder to find reasonable priced Priorat, a region in Spain southwest of Barcelona, know for it’s hill towns and old vine Cariñena and Garnacha. On the nose, youthful, earth, leather, cherry, strawberry, herbs and flowers, not oaky, and lots of earth. On the palate, dry, explosive fruit, med+ tannins, balanced with great acidity, and a very long complex finish dominated by spice. This will easily go ten years in the cellar and get more complex. Expensive but a definite treat. Josh Reynalds scored this 94 pts and it retails for all over the $70″s on different sites, I’ll beat anyone’s price.

2005 Buil & Gine Priorat ginegine

This is the second time I have tried this wine and have been very impressed with the balance of fruit and the massive structure. Priorat at this price and quality almost doesn’t exist. 60% Cargnan 40% Garnacha, half of which is old vines. Dark garnet in color of medium intensity. On the nose, youthful, med+ intensity, lots of earth and minerals, black tar, ripe raspberry, cranberry, leather, spice, sandlewood, and an herbaceous quality. On the palate, dry, big ripe figs, some strawberry came out, loads of structure, and a long powerful finish. It’s rare to find this kind of length at this kind of price. This will cellar well for at least 7 to 10 years, and you will laugh all the way to the bank.
