2007 Mas de Can Blau Montsant

I hadn’t tried this one and some time ago it slipped on the menu to beef up our Spain section, 35% Syrah, 35% Carignan and 30% Grenache. Dark garnet color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, bright and jammy dark plum, blackberry, raspberry, clove, herbs, anise, leather, vanilla, coffee, no earth, and definite oak. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, great depth and balance, where luscious fruit meets rich oak flavors, a lot going on for a medium bodied wine.

2006 Can Blau Spain

A local retailer was showcasing this wine a few weeks back as a Spanish Syrah, and I really liked it. I have come to find out it’s 40% Syrah, 40% Carinena, 20% Garnacha, from a rising star of a region in Spain. Great dark ruby color. On the nose, youthful, med+ intensity, dark berry, smoke, seaweed, black pepper, soy sauce component, some dirt and earth, and not oaky. On the palate, dry, juicy fruit but structured also. Med tannin, med acidity, and med+ finish. I think this is one of those wines under $20 that makes more expensive wines look a little foolish.

2004 Estecillo Vinas Viejas Nino Jesus

Eighty year old garnacha vines producing a wine under $10, come on.
I was really impressed with how much character this wine had and have consumed more than a six pack, I wish others would help me out, my inventory is getting out of control.
Light ruby in color, medium- intensity, it almost looks like a new world Pinot.
On the nose med+ intensity, lots of dirt in this wine, and dried herbs. They say that jagermeister if infused with 55 herbs. Well this has about 27 of them. For fruit I got raspberry and blackberry. On the palate, med intensity,
the dirt, the fruit, the herb, throw in some tea leaves, and a minty thing, med tannin, med acidity, med alcohol. Quite a lot going on for under $10. Put down those mass produced Merlots, and have an adventure.
