2009 Tarima Hill Monastrell

This rocked my wine world the other night. Dark and monstrous black and red cherry fruit wrapped in a oaky and spice laden package. Perhaps the best $15 retail wine I have ever tried. DO you like bbq? Because this would kill it with bbq, or anything off the grill, it reminded me of the best Zinfandel I have ever tried but better.

2008 Finca Luzon Monastrell Jumilla Spain

Although my review is somewhat biased because I have long thought this is one of the best $10 wines on the market, I am able to keep my objectivity. Black purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, loaded with dark berry fruit, almost stewed, with lots of dried herbs, meat stick, with some creamy oak spice, and a chalky soil minerality. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium body, medium tannin, medium acidity, I was left with the feeling that this wine was near perfectly constructed, with just the right amount of all the layers to feel complete, with good balance, and a descent finish for a $10 wine. I love this wine with meat of the grill, and it reminds me of $20 Zinfandel or Shiraz.

2008 El Nido Jumilla Spain

My first taste of the new vintage that for years has been my favorite “old world” “new world style” wine that I cannot afford. Black purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, blackberry, black plum, cedar, coffee, herbs, mineral, meat, some oak, and some earth too. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, textured, pretty ripe black fruit, herbs, meat stick, luxurious, layered, just an awesome wine, with a solid finish. Not cheap but worth every penny, and will kick the pants off any $100 Napa Cabernet.

2007 El Nido

Distracted by conversation I almost missed the tail end of this bottle at a back yard bbq at Elliot bay rep’s house. Black purple color. On the nose, youthful, very intense, big luscious blackberry and blueberry fruit, with some fig and coffee, smothered in vanilla, spice, cocoa, and almost dairy nose. On the palate, dry, luscious, explosive, creamy, big old candy bar of a wine with medium tannins, medium acidity, good balance, and layers upon layers of flavors. Buy this Wine!

2008 Wrongo Dongo Monastrell Jumilla

The new vintage on this wine came in with a new label, same silly name, but this wine delivers in so many ways. Purple garnet in color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, raspberry, blackberry, boysenberry, meat, leather, herbs, spice, earth, and slight oak. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, good balance, bright dark fruit, wrapped in mineral and herbs, with a good meaty character, and a solid finish. Solid wine especially with the bbq.

2008 Daniel Belda Monastrell Jumilla Spain 5 L Box

I had tried this out of the 750 ml format and that it was good inexpensive wine  so I had to try this, my very first wine out of a box. Ruby color, medium intensity. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, not all that aromatic, but I was able to detect some cherry, earth, herbs, meat, licorice, and not oaky. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, red fruit, leather, spice, and earth. Pleasant but nothing all that exciting about the flavors or finish. At this kind of price I am not shocked at the quality, but pretty darn serviceable for the money.

2004 El Nido Clio

clioVery black purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, red cherry, boysenberry, blackberry, red vine licorice, cloves, herbs, meaty, lots of dairy, lots of oak, with slight mineral. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, big and luscious fruit, candy bar elements, caramel and nougat, medium tannin, medium acidity, lots of body, very complex, with a nice finish.

2008 Verasol Monastrell Jumilla

Verasol MCSjPurple color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, plums, blackberry, cherry, meat, smoke, dried herbs, lots of dried earth, and not oaky. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium body, stewed fruit component, muscular wine, with medium+ tannins, medium+ acidity, with moderate length on the finish. Excellent $10 retail wine.
