NV Maques de Gelida Rose Cava

gelida_roseI love bubbles, especially from Pinot Noir, and the market has caused prices of similar quality Rose from Champagne to go through the roof. Pretty salmon to pink in color with a nice small bead to the bubble. On the nose, strawberry, cherry, hay, bread, an amazing array of flowers, spice, mineral, slight earth, and not oaky. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, great body, medium+ acidity, creamy mouth feel, with green apple, strawberry, mineral, flowers, spice, and a 15 second finish. Seek this out.

2005 Mont-Marcal Cava Brut Reserva

Equal parts Xarel-lo, Parellada, and Macabeo, and aged 15-24 months on lees. On the nose, aroma, medium intensity, nice creamy apple and pear fruit, wonder bread, toasted nuts, some earth, some chalk, but mainly fruit driven. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, apple, pear, bread, great acidity, good mouthfeel, and a long finish. It’s hard not to have a good mouthfeel if you’ve got bubbles, but seriously this wine delivers.

Seguras Viudas NV Brut Reserva Cava

This has to be the best sparkler on the planet under $7. I am baffled that they can do this volume at such a low cost, with traditional method, that is the secondary fermentation happens in bottle. Platinum color, of med- intensity. On the nose, aroma, ripe apples, floral component, chalky, bready, but not quite to the level of Champagne. On the palate, great mousse, good acidity, structured but not all that deep. I honestly haven’t had a better everyday drinker. Try this with the Guayuki Yerba Mate Passionfruit below, for the perfect Mimosa.
