2004 Tinto Estecillo Nino Jesus Vinas Viejas

nino_jesusI grabbed this out of an assortment of SPanish Garnacha I have accumulated. Garnet color with some serious rim variation, complete watery rim. On the nose, developed, medium intensity, dirt, hay, white pepper, mint, mushroom, cranberry, wild strawberry, dill, plenty of earthy, and moderate oak. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, balanced alcohol, earth, cherry , strawberry, herb, and spice dominate the palate, with a medium body, and a finish longer than 15 seconds.    

2007 Bodegas Ateca Atteca Garnacha Calatayud

atteca 100% Garnacha. Soft ruby color with a slight cloudiness. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, smoke, mineral, hay, dried earth, red licorice, subtle oak, lots of white pepper. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, very focused fruit, medium tannin, medium acidity, moderate alcohol, nicely balanced wine with a bit of muscle on the finish, then creamy fruit. I am getting more of this one.    

2003 Miguel Torres Grand Coronas Cabernet Sauvignon

This was a surprise from a trade tasting yesterday. Miguel Torres is one of the gods of Spanish wine, so I shouldn’t have been. On the nose, moving toward bouquet, medium intensity, smoke, meaty, cedar, cherries, currants, leather, spice, good earthy component, and some oak too. On the palate, dry, med+ intensity, good fruit earth and wood combination, good tannic structure, balanced wine, with medium alcohol, and a long spicy finish. I am picking some up for my cellar.    

2004 Estecillo Vinas Viejas Nino Jesus


Eighty year old garnacha vines producing a wine under $10, come on.
I was really impressed with how much character this wine had and have consumed more than a six pack, I wish others would help me out, my inventory is getting out of control.
Light ruby in color, medium- intensity, it almost looks like a new world Pinot.
On the nose med+ intensity, lots of dirt in this wine, and dried herbs. They say that jagermeister if infused with 55 herbs. Well this has about 27 of them. For fruit I got raspberry and blackberry. On the palate, med intensity,
the dirt, the fruit, the herb, throw in some tea leaves, and a minty thing, med tannin, med acidity, med alcohol. Quite a lot going on for under $10. Put down those mass produced Merlots, and have an adventure.
