2006 Warwick Pinotage Stellenbosch

warwick_pinotagePerhaps the first Pinotage I have ever enjoyed. On the nose youthful, plum, black raspberry, herns, rubber, smoke, band-aid, some oak, some earth too. On the palate, dry, similar fruit, medium+ tannin, medium acidity, moderate alcohol, a milkshake component, and old tire quality with black pepper and leather emerged. Fascinating wine that some might find offensive, but I thought it had enough fruit to stand up to the dominating Band-Aid of Pinotage.

2007 Kanu Chenin Blanc Stellenbosch South Africa

kanu_stellenbosch_steenHad this blind last week at the Tilth group. I guessed Old World Chenin Blanc or Pinot Gris. So close. There was a lot of flavor in this inexpensive bottling. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, granny smith apple, honeydew melon, citrus peel, chervil, white flower, funky sea shell, some minerality, and no oak to speak of. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, some tangelo, apple, wet stone minerality, nice floral component, medium+ acidity, medium body, medium alcohol, nice refreshing clean finish. This is a varietal and region that I would like to explore more of.
