NV Sorelle Branco Prosecco di Valdobbiadene

branca_proseccoNot as impressed with this one on the retry but still delicious. On the nose, youthful, apple peach, tangerine, lemon, slight mineral, and not oaky. On the palate, dry, very ripe tree fruit, some banana, beautiful acidity, moderate fizz, with a pleasant finish. There are better values out there, but this wine still delivers.

NV Sorelle Branco Prosecco di Valdobbiadene

branca_proseccoI was extremely impressed with the deliciousness of this wine. Platinum in color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, banana, honeydew, cantaloupe, very floral, slight mineral, slight bready note, no oak, with faint earth. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium+ acidity, very pretty array of tropical melon fruit, loaded with bananas, rich mouth feel, with a nice finish. A bit more spendy than I would like for a Prosecco, but incredible flavors and worth twice as much for the experience alone.

2005 Allegrini Palazzo della Torre IGT

This was one of the one of the best wines at a tasting last week. Somewhat like Amarone, but only 30% of the grapes go through a shortened air drying period. The blend is 70% Corvina Veronese, 25% Rondinella and 5% Sangiovese, .On the nose, medium+ intensity, youthful black fruit, meat, smoked pork, tar, spice, chalky earthy character, some oak, and some raisin. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, big fruit, med+ tannin, earthiness, and spice, and floral quality, very balanced, with a long finish. Well worth the price.

2000 Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella

A couple came in with this last week, but I don’t think they were a couple, more like japanese-american businessman in his late thirties with a lot of connections and attitude entertaining a moderately good looking but exposing too much cleavage kind of trampy girl looking for a little over-achieving, if you know what I mean. Funny thing was the wine wasn’t as good as the reputation suurounding the name, I honestly analyzed the wine long before they tipped me, and it’s been weeks since the tasting. On the nose, medium- intensity, bouquet, classic stewy fruit, chalky soil, tar, meat and spice, not oaky, and carrying some earthy character. On the palate, dry, obvious raisinated character, some earth, some oak, some pepper, medium+ tannin, medium acidity, and good length on the finish.I didn’t see what this cost but suspect that there are other wineries no one will recognize that produce the same kind of quality at a fraction the price.

2003 Masi Amarone Costesera

A table was drinking this wine tonight, and I was lucky enough to have a fraction of a glass. I have to admit that I was several glasses in by the time I got to this wine so my note is a bit week. On the nose, pretty new world, aroma, lacking dust and earth, but rocking the oak and stewed fruit. Think plum and fig compote. On the palate, dry, juicy stewed fruit, not really earthy, oak for sure, structured but simple. I honestly expected more bang for the buck, yes I realize my restaurant charges too much for wine, but Amarone’s value has risen and the dollar has fallen. There are better Amarone’s out there, save some money by being savvy.

2005 Allegrini La Grola IGT

70% Corvina Veronese, 15% Rondinella, 10% Syrah and 5% Sangiovese, call this a Super-Veronese. Browing ruby in color, medium intensity. On the nose, aroma, earth driven, lots of chalk, dried tea leaves stewed fruit, plums and figs. On medium the palate, dry, medium intensity, star anise, sour cherry, and clove. Good acidity, medium tannin, and a nice moderate finish. I called this one a Sangiovese blend from Italy in our tasting group.

1997 Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella

Aunt Sena and Uncle Bill broke this out the other night, said they’ve been saving it for a while to drink with me, and again I am thankful for the wine that finds me one way or another.
Great browing ruby with orange tint at the edges, of medium intensity. On the nose, med+ intensity bouquet. I got stewed fruit, plums, figs, cherries, anise, clove, meat, and smoke. On the palate, dry, med+ intensity, massive mouthfeel, still loads of tannic structure, and acidity to balance it all out. Med+ alchohol, med+ finish, I am a better person having tasted this wine.
