2008 Brancaia Tre

An 80% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon blend I picked up after a tasting two weeks ago, tonight was the first time I got around to popping a bottle. What a score, shocking depth for the money. Ruby to purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, black cherry, plum, currant, violets, anise, dried cranberry, loaded with mineral, so much depth with oak and earth. On the palate, dry, medium body, medium+ intensity, medium tannins, balanced and layered, this wine will stop you in your tracks, cherries, currants, leather, spices, this wine goes deep! Buy it Now!

2002 Tenuta dell Ornellaia Messeto

Dark garnet color. On the nose, developed, medium+ intensity, figs and black currants, bittersweet chocolate, chalky earth, tobacco, layered, complex beyond expression, with lots of earth and a nice oak component. On the palate, dry, seamless, medium+ body, medium tannin, medium acidity, serious balance, serious beauty, with ridiculous depth, and complexity that made me wish I made enough money to enjoy treats like this all the time!

2006 Gaja Ca’marcanda Magari

A gift from a colleague, blend is 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc. Purple to garnet color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, currant, leather, chalky soil, chocolate, with cherry, some dried herbs, tobacco, oak and earth, the fruit is is pure but definitely on the back burner here. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium acidity, medium tannins, good balance, pure black currant fruit, leather, tobacco, and certain minerality, with layers of flavors, and good complexity. I have always and continue to have a soft spot for this wine, and it keeps delivering.

Borgo Scopeto Borgonero IGT

Purple ruby color. Produced using 60% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Syrah grapes. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, plums and cherries, black tea, anise, leather, dried herbs, framed by chalky soil component, and wrapped in a new world style french oak package. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, nice structure and balance, nicely layered, with a solid finish. The fruit on this wine is just ripe enough to wear the oak layers. Great $20 wine that will continue to evolve from a while.

2005 Piaggia Carmignano Reserva

I’d never even heard of this region before today. Apparently, this small DOCG in Tuscany has to have Cabernet Sauvignon in it, and it’s the predecessor of the Super-Tuscan. Dark ruby color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, plum, cherry, chalky earth, licorice, leather, chocolate, spice, some oak, with lots of mineral and earth. On the palate, dry, medium intensity. medium- tannin, medium acidity, layered, velvety, and balanced, with lots of rich and opulent fruit, but minerally enough to keep me intrigued. Not cheap but this wine rocked.

2003 Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello di Montalcino

Brilliant ruby color, with orange rim. On the nose, developing, medium+ intensity, sour cherry, leather, chalky soil, plum, salami, anise, smoke, earth present, with moderate oak. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannins, medium+ acidity, with very nice balance, a solid finish, and good complexity. I’ve always liked this producer, and this wine over-delivered classic Brunello flavors.

2007 Ciacci Piccolomini Toscana IGT
