2007 Maurigi Bacca Rossa IGT Sicilia

Second to last bottle that I picked up a half case of after tasting. I was curious how this Southern Italian blend would age. Purple ruby color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, loaded with mineral, wild berry, dried herbs, anise, not oaky, with lots of earth. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium+ acidity, black licorice, dried herbs, hay, red berries, with good depth of complexity, and descent finish. Interesting wine!

I’ve considered this wine one of the best Chardonnay’s…Continue Reading

2007 Tenuta della Terre Nere Guardiola

This wine rocked! 98% Nerello Mascalese, never heard of it, and 2% Nerello Cappucio, also never heard of it, grown on the black soil slopes of Mount Etna, Sicily. Said to be “Burgundy meets Barolo” this eye-opener really blew my mind and palate. It’s one of those wines that remind me how much I want…Continue Reading

2006 Planeta Chardonnay Sicily

Perhaps my favorite Chardonnay over the past several years. This wine single-handedly put Sicily back on the map, as far as quality wine making goes. Ridiculous color, serious golden blonde. On the nose, youthful, lots of carmel apple, pear, lots of mineral, iron, steel, butterscotch, daffodil, wonder bread, honey, some oak, and lots of earth.…Continue Reading

2006 Martorana Colonna IGT Nero d’Avola & Syrah

We polished off two bottles of this after working Thanksgiving at the restaurant, and three other wines, which could have been the reason I was so lethargic yesterday, must remember to drink more water next time. While searching the net for images there were some unfavorable reviews that called for more cellaring and aeration. I…Continue Reading
