2007 Feraud Brunel Chateauneuf de Pape

Ruby color. On the nose, youthful, earthy, medium+ intensity, dried herbs, meaty, raspberry, strawberry, perfume, red licorice, clove, mushroom, hay, with moderate oak. On the palate, dry, meaty, gamey, chocolate, strawberry, with good spice, mineral, medium tannins, medium acidity, very nice balance, good depth and complexity, and a solid finish. There was an intriguing component to this wine, from a vintage that is supposed to rock, this wine delivers I must have more.

2004 Andre Brunel Chateaunuef de Pape

This was the top dog at a Robert Kacher tasting put on by Noble Wines. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, some hay, dirt, stewwed plums, herbs, black pepper, some oak, but I would call it way below average. On the palate, dry, good cherry, dried herbs, balanced, med tannin, medium acidity, nice finish. I would really like to see how this matches up with GSM’s from around the world at the same price.

2005 Bousquet des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape

Low intensity ruby in color, looked like a Burgundy to me. On the nose, aroma moving to bouquet of medium intensity. Strawberry, hay, stewed plums, spice, dried herbs, and a whole lot of earth. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, med- tannin, medium acidity, med alcohol, and a moderate finish. This wine showed pretty nice, I expect a little more muscle from this region, but the blend could be really heavy in grenache.

2003 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf de Pape

Legendary region and producer, and this vintage got some huge scores. Back in the old days, they used to add bottles of CdP to Bordeaux in cask to strengthen it’s tannins, that’s illegal now. Critics say that this is a great vintage, heat wave year, and everything ripened in access in my opinion. Dark purple ruby, of medium+ intensity. On the nose, aroma, of medium+ intensity, stewed cherries and plums, hay, bacon, smoked beef, dried thyme and sage, no oak, but a whole lot of dirt, and wet dirt at that. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, structured but not tannic, long finish. I would love to see this paired with some lamb shank, or dark mysterious meat. A bit expensive but great pedigree and made me a little happier trying it.
