2004 Texier Cote Rotie

texier_rotieThis wine just destroyed all others at the tasting. Ruby to black in color. On the nose, youthful but showing some development, medium+ intensity, very ripe black fruit, plums, figs, cherries, cracked pepper, meat stick, awesome array of spice, nicely integrated oak, and neatly tucked behind all that is some earth. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium tannin+, medium+ acidity, medium body, awesome structure, extremely well balanced, layered with spice, and possessing an almost divine finish. Spendy but extraordinary.

2005 Patrick Jasmine Cote Rotie

jasmin_coteInky purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, plum, blackberry, black pepper, game, violets, wet leaves, old tire, some oak, and some earth. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium+ acidity, very broad array of fruit, meat, earth, and oak. This wine delivered something more meaty and floral, with a distinct earthy component, but had a moderate finish for something this expensive. The size and obscurity of this region has something to do with the price structure, but historically this is a region focused on power, and there are not enough vineyards to go around so prices are steep.
