2005 Joseph Drouhin Chorey Les Beaune

This was the old world Pinot Noir that I brought to the tasting. It showed very true to it’s varietal and region. I thought this wine was pretty good for it’s price, lacked the delicious factor, but made up with earth and complexity. Light ruby in color, of low intensity, you can read the sunday paper through this wine. On the nose, medium intensity, aroma, dirt, mushroom, wet leaves, strawberry, orange peel, watermelon, and cooking spice. Oak is detectable but moderate. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, dust, strawberry, watermelon, earth and spice. Low tannin, medium acidity, and a pretty descent finish. It’s hard to find good Pinot at this price, especially with the weak dollar. Try this with rabbit.

1990 Joseph Drouhin Clos de Mouches

This was my first opportunity to taste aged Burgundy. I didn’t have the opportunity to spend a lot of time with this wine, and that may be the reason I thought it was very good, not great.
Pretty browning ruby, and a med low intensity, the kind you can see through.
On the nose, bright candied cherry, then stewed plum and fig, cinnamon, and earth. On the palate, the earth really hit me hit me and started running for the finish line. Subtle elegant sexy juice I tasted for minutes.
When tasting great Burgundy it is important to not expect and Cabernet. It’s a different beast, and the finish can be deceiving, what seems like a not that powerful wine can finish like a champ and last.
