I found out after the fact that this was the second wine of the first growth, Chateau Haut-Brion, named for a family that owned a piece of the estate and made valuable contributions to the quality of the estate. On the nose, big-time basement and earthy nose, some serious leather, and pencil shavings. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, earthy leather, medium tannin, medium acidity, medium finish. I felt like this was lacking something, later realized it lacked fruit, and lacked delisciousness.
