Visit to Boudreax Cellars

On our way back to Seattle from camping, we stopped by Boudreaux, and had a great visit with Rob Newsom, owner/winemaker. He’s still makes wine the old fashioned way, with an old basket press, which he explained prevents him from over-pressing, and therefore having more gentle tannins. You get a laid back sense from this cool character, and a down to earth wine sensibility. I couldn’t help but look around, awed by the natural beauty, and see where he gets his inspiration. Go visit, his wines are exceptional!

Meet the Winemaker: Ben Smith

We went over to Cadence Winery to purchase a few used barrels for the 08 Syrah and got to spend a few minutes with Ben, Boeing Wine Club guy turned Guru of Red Mountain. It is obvious that I need to spend more time around people as knowledgeable about the production of wine as Ben is. As a bonus we got to do a little punch down on some Taptiel Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. I was completely unaware what a serious workout it was to punch down the cap of one and a half tons of grapes. It’s time again, the season is changing, the grapes are coming.

Meet the Winemaker: Phillipe Pacalet

I spaced about the tasting notes on these wines for a few weeks, and will have more to follow if I can find some descent images. There are several archetypes of the winemaker out there now. Philippe was of the super-chill, super-cool earthy guy, living in some other realm, some somehow more inter-connected with the sun, the moon, the water, and the celestial bodies. He talked at length of quantum physics, and the moment in time that you are in at all times, but especially the moment you are in when experiencing wine. I found his ideas and connectedness to the earth profound, and when I slowed my busy world down just for a few moments, enjoyed his wines that much more.
