2009 Lo Tengo Torrontes Mendoza

Platinum color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, peaches, mango, grapefruit, with lots of white flowers, slight mineral, with no oak to speak to. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium acidity, flowery fruit cocktail, with a solid finish. Not overly complex, but there’s no denying the umami of this wine.

2006 Melipal Malbec Reserva

Dark purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, lots of dark berries, boysenberry, blueberry, blackberry, wet earth, bark, herbs, leather, spice, lots of New World Oak, with subtle traces of mineral and earth. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, pretty nice balance, dark inky fruit, with some coffee flavors coming through, above average oak, but it’s nicely integrated with the the fruit, and framed by some cigar and forest flavors. Solid Malbec with moderate length to the finish. Not as delicious as the Norton or Altos Las Hormigas but this drinks pretty well.

2005 Proemio Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva

Ruby with some brown to it. On the nose, youthful but moving toward development, medium intensity, plum, cherry, pine cone, cedar, tobacco, caramel, some oak, and no earth to speak to. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, good acidity, balanced, fruity, spicy, oaky, with good secondary leather and cedar, and a moderate finish. Not that recognizable as Cab Sauv but a delicious wine, is this one that I should have packed a box and shipped some back to the US?

2007 Enrique Foster Malbec Reserva

Ruby color with fuschia edges. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, blueberry, boysenberry, blackberry, coffee, leather, slight briary element, seaweed, some earth, and some oak. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, moderate alcohol, luscious and textured, spices a plenty, with some length to the finish. Good representation of Reserva Malbec, but not awesome, must revisit for further analysis!

2008 Colonia las Liebres Bonarda

One of the treasures of the trip to Mendoza, Bonarda is originally from Italy. Black purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, black plum, blackberry, marionberry, clove, anise, mint, herbs, very perfumey and floral, not earthy, and very little oak. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, black fruit, blue fruit, spices, and nice length to the finish. This wine is a very balanced pretty wine with a true medium- body, perhaps a bit more than a rich Pinot Noir, but no-where near a full bodied Merlot. Enjoy with pork, chicken, or any of the wild birds, or pasta.

2008 Alta Vista Torrontes

Platinum color. On the nose, youthful, med+ intensity, peach, pear, grapefruit, a fruit cocktail, white rose, lilac, no oak, and no earth. On the palate, dry, medium acidity, very pretty fruit and flower combo, with richness and weight, and moderate length to the finish. Very under appreciated white that more people should know about.

2005 Pascual Toso Malbec Pedregal Vineyard

Dark purple color. On the nose, youthful, med+ intensity, layered and dense with blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry, plum, sage, wet tobacco, pretty spices, balanced oak, and no earth to speak to. On the palate, dry, med+ intensity, med tannin, med acidity, amazing depth and balance, loaded with layers and a stellar finish, this wine nails $100 depth for $50! I want more!

2007 Altos de Las Hormigas Reserva Malbec

Black purple color. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, blueberry, black plum, leather, subtle briary component, inky, violets, with moderate, oak, and no earth. On the palate, dry, medium+ intensity, medium tannin, medium acidity, explosive black and blue fruit, loaded with spices, and rounded out with layer oak, with beautiful texture, very nice balance, and an above average length to the finish.
