2007 Nicolas Potel Echezeaux Grand Cru

nicolas_echezeaux Yesterday was a killer lunch tasting at the Corson Building put on by the generous folks of the Southern Odom partnership. I thought this was the most intriguing wine of the tasting, and offered more mystery than than the rest. On the nose, medium+ intensity, youthful, cherries, raspberries, loads of earth, mushroom, nutmeg, forest floor, all spice, some oak but just the right amount. On the palate, dry, medium intensity,medium- tannins, medium acidity, awesome texture that evolved a lot in the glass, earth tones, soil, graced by some pure red fruit, with serious balance, and love velvety finish. I wish I could afford this wine because it’s going to be awesome.

2007 Nicolas Potel Clos de Veugot Grand Cru

nicolas_clos_vougeot Another barrel sample, and kicked up a couple notches in the quality and intrigue factor. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, wet clay, hay, cherry, strawberry, citrus rind, autumn leaves, not oaky, and some detectable earth beautifully woven together. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, silky, light weight, medium- tannin, medium acidity, similar flavor components as nose, incredible balance, with a nice spice finish. This was one of those wines that made me want more, and ponder the notion of being youthful and all wound up, and how much of this complexity will improve with time.

2007 Nicolas Potel Vosne Romanee VV

nicolas_vosne Hard to believe this was a barrel sample, so soft, elegant, and ready to drink. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, classic soil and stone component, strawberry, red cherry, cinnamon, hay, nutmeg, with some oak present. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, silky tannin, medium acidity, harmonious fruit and earth, with an impressive velvety finish of moderate length. I could have chugged this one.

2007 Nicolas Potel Pommard “Les Vignots”

nicholaspotel_pommard Barrel sample at luncheon today. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, powerful sour cherry, raspberry, dried herbs, white pepper, cooking spices, moderate oak, and earth definitely present. On the palate, dry, medium tannin, medium acidity, earth, leather, lots of spice, of a moderate finish. Just a baby but will evolve nicely.

2006 Joseph Drouhin Vero Borgogne

Short For Veronique, she blended this from a few of her favorite villages, in this entry level Pinot that brings great quality for the dollar. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, wet earth, cherries, cooking spices, mushrooms, some oak and earth. On the palate, dry, medium intensity, tart cherries, that forest floor thing, medium tannin, lighter body, medium alcohol, and a nice finish. One of the better under $20 Pinots I have tried, not as complex as a lot of Pinot’s out there but they happen to be twice as expensive.

2006 Philippe Pacalet Gevrey-Chamertin 1er Cru Bel Air

There is a reason this district has the most Grand Cru Vineyards in Burgundy. This was the most expensive of the tasting but just killed it. On the nose, youthful, medium+ intensity, beautiful cinnamon stick component, followed by stone and wet earth, then the strawberry and black cherry cola, and very subtle oak. On the palate, dry, medium tannin, medium acidity, nice fruit balanced with mineral, and a lavender, Herbs de Provance, amazing structure, and length on the finish. Certainly not cheap, but worth every penny considering the prices that som many wines get these days for less quality.

2006 Philippe Pacalet Pommard

On the nose, earth driven but still youthful, medium intensity, with elegent mushroom, bark, wet leaf, dirt, cherry cola, good spice character, not oaky, and very layered. On the palate, big-time structure for Pinot Noir, red fruit, red currants, cranberry, earth, some wood spice, med tannins, med acidity, iron fist velvet glove type of finish.

2005 Vincent Girardin Bourgogne Cuvee Saint-Vincent

This producer is rocking beautiful wines all over Burgindy all the way up to the Grand Cru Level. Cuvee Saint-Vincent is AC Bourgogne at it’s best, in an excellent vintage, where locals were saying that if you couldn’t make great wine in 05, you should get out of the business. Clear ruby in color of medium intensity. On the nose, youthful, medium intensity, dirt, poop in a good way, hay, mushrooms, strawberry, cranberry, cinnamon, and slight oak. On the palate, dry, med intensity, a cherry cough drop component, earthy, silky tannins, nicely balanced, and a decent finish. New World Pinot at this price point just don’t have the complexity that this shows.
